The following weeks seemed to fly by, yet no matter how hard I tried to keep the dreams from my mind by focusing on nothing but my life there and my beautiful husband; no matter how hard he tried to keep me focused on our love by exhausting me wonderfully before sleep tumbled upon us—the dreams came to me. At first, they only came once a week, but as March tumbled into April and that into May, they visited twice a week, then three times… until finally, I found myself in that place I didn’t understand every night. It became a ritual that I both looked forward to and dreaded at the same time: Shelly undressing me while I undressed him, a hungry lovemaking began and its ending found us both collapsing in each other's arms nearly asleep almost immediately. While that was all well and good, it was then that the dream world descended…
"Oh, my gods! Ki-chan, you would not believe this shit! What are you doing to yourself, Keira!" the light-hearted voice I now knew belonged to a girl named Krissie exclaimed. "I swear I do not understand this woman, Ki-chan… she has a beautiful body and yet, she looks like she's going all anorexic on us! I swear, a breeze is gonna blow her away!"
I heard the sound of a door opening just before I heard an elderly female voice call out, "Krissie?"
"Yeah?" Krissie replied and that horrific sound of scraping metal immediately followed her response.
"You have some high-profile visitors—"
The door to the cottage slammed open, Cameron's shout sending both Shelly and I bolting upright into sitting positions, and me scrambling for something to cover my bare hips. Seconds later, the pirate burst into the bedroom, calling out, "A ship! A ship! On the horizon, a ship!"
My blood froze at those nine words. Shelly tugged me into his lap, wrapping both arms around me protectively, demanding, "What sort of ship?"
Cameron's eyes widened. "A… A ship ship. A big ship. A ship with—"
"Did you see movement on it? Were there crewmen? Was there a captain?" I asked, my words apparently in a rush to leave my mouth.
"Aye!" Cameron ran over to our window, throwing open the shutters to point. "Out there! A longboat! I'm goin' out there to meet it!"
As soon as he left the cottage, both Shelly and I clambered out of bed to gaze out the window at the eastern horizon. We watched Cameron running towards the beach… towards the longboat making its way to shore. I step backwards into Shelly's arms, grateful when they slid around me in a tight embrace, his lips pressing a kiss to the crook of my neck. I took my hands down his strong arms, my fingers finding and threading through his as I whispered, "What do you think this means?"
Shelly shook his head. "I do not wish to presume, but there be one thing I know well, Kiyoshi… whatever it means—" He turned me around to face him, his large hands cupping my face.
